10pm Monday Night Joe King Oliver's band

Sophia Feature's Creole Jazz Music

Sophia's Place

Date / Time: 12/29/2008 10:00 PM

Category: Music

Call-in Number: (347) 843-4766

Ok another chance to play music for the holidays. I have fallen DEEPLY in love with old Dixieland, and old New Orleans Jazz music in the past year. Musicians most folks are not aware of...Sure we have heard of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington ..but I am going to play music from Armstrong's mentor and one of the BIGGEST influences in jazz, Joe "King" Oliver. His Creole Jazz band is very old stuff but fantastic! This show will be a little history of the music and musicians on this CD. As most folks reflect on their year, I am choosing to learn more about the music I have been exposed to in the last year. But don't worry, show will be MOSTLY MUSIC. Only 30 minutes, no more than 5 minutes of talking. Tell your Jazz friends or young musicians to listen. Great slide show of folks playing on this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2QEBshAQ68

All Music Night.

Might open with a modern Christmas tune, but the rest will be classical music..Smetana's the Moldau for one, and some Chopin. So if you are tired of Christmas music, this is the place to listen. Hope you enjoy the selections.

Monday night the 15th.

Whatever is on my mind, in the goofy news, some tunes, might be jazzy Christmas stuff, might be something else. Then again, my show is always something else! :) May or may not play more tunes than normal....just depends on my mood. But I am sure I will find something to whine about to open the show. Oh, and I can't forget my M&M's story. Tune in, same time, same station.

Monday: It's time for quirky news and minutia.

Remember when toys meant USING your imagination? Check out this site for classic toys and a blast from the past. http://www.backtobasicstoys.com/

Remember toys that did not live up to commercials or those that did? The slinky or Easy Bake Oven? Offbeat news, worm surgery, and other minutia, I promise!. And some tunes. New time 10pm EST. Just thirty minutes so not a major time commitment. Have some Thanksgiving leftover stories? If it’s Monday, there’s always time for minutia. Give me a call.

Do Kids Have Too Much self Esteem these days?

Are we seeing more narcissism?

Photobucket

Years ago improving self esteem seemed to be the key to helping kids feel better about themselves. Instead, kids today are more self absorbed than ever, have no empathy for others, and criminals often think very highly of themselves and go off the charts in the "self esteem" range.

Don't we need to find a balance? Look at generation X and some of their horrible social skills. Is it because they don't care? Too much time on computers? Let's talk about this. Let me know what you think. Been around any brats lately? :)

A Truly Historical Election

Ok, I did not vote for either main candidate (a big third party gal!) but was totally caught up in the evening starting about 9pm...Watched two tvs (one muted with close captioning, one with sound) and between stations. We found ourselves watching Fox News the most due to the most classy guy on that station, Brit Hume (and sadly he is retiring !!!) He also has a great sense of humor. I felt I was in the twilight zone as a little past 9pm, Karl Rove (NOT my favorite person) pointed out the obstacles facing McCain...and I thought "whoa"....could a black man really become our president? If Rove saw the problems that early...my oh, my.

Not only did he win, but then McCain gave --what I thought to be-- a very sincere and gracious speech (How sad Obama's grandmother died yesterday and McCain mentioned that, too)

Then Karl Rove went on to say America needs to CELEBRATE this election and to say a prayer and stand behind the new president, etc. I had to make sure I was not hallucinating. It was so nice not having Sean Vanity on to gunk things up.

Again, I love Brit Hume but what came out of the mouths of some of the others truly touched me as well. Juan Williams (black correspondent for NPR and Fox News) spoke of his surprise that a black man REALLY DID become president...and seemed to be touched by it all when it was made official at 11pm EST...it was just a splendid evening of tv viewing....I suddenly wished I had gone to the big Democrat Headquarters party with my sister but it was too far away.

So I got a few of my photos, captured some off the internet and put together this little slide show. If you can't get past what happened tonight, skip it. If you either voted for Obama or can just APPRECIATE an historical election night, enjoy the little slide show. Music of Dire Straits, "Walk of Life".

After some photographs of different parts of the country, you will see Obama as a little boy with his mother, and then his grandparents and then he with his grandmother. I had to include her in this vignette.

November 3rd Show 11pm: Rants and Raves from the major to the minutiae

Have you tried to call your phone company/cable company/utility company lately? You can get stuck in voice mail hell, on hold for 40 minutes just to get the wrong dept and start over again. Lather rinse repeat. Thankfully my landline phone company offers a call back service if hold times are long. That's a rave imo.

Have you called for computer service/repair? Do you get the feeling you have called Mars instead? Or maybe you are fed up with all the political adds? Just one more day left! Or how about all those ubiquitous "E.D." adds that are offensive during nightly news and sporting events. Yikes! This is not a DVR house so we are stuck with the adds but we do tape some shows on a VCR sometimes.

Whether your gripe is major or minutiae, I want to hear from YOU. Email me before the show to voice your two cents if you can't join me live, or register and join us in chat or as my one radio buddy calls it, 'the guest room.' Sophiaz123@live.com

Hope to see ya there!
